Scottsdale, Arizona - a town with an unassuming name, a rich history and plenty of character. It's home to ranchers, cowboys, golfers and plenty of other interesting characters. Throughout the years it has seen its share of highs and lows but never ceased to be an oasis in the desert.

What is now the city of Scottsdale was once the land of the Hohokam people. They were an ancient Indigenous group who settled in what is now known as Central Arizona over two thousand years ago and developed a culture that revolved around agriculture. They built canals to irrigate their farms creating some of Arizona’s first irrigation systems. After their disappearance from the area, various Native American tribes such as the Pima and Maricopa made their homes here for centuries before being displaced by European settlers.

The town itself was founded in 1888 when Winfield Scott purchased 640 acres from a local rancher named William Murphy for $3 an acre. At the time it was known simply as "orchard grove” due to its abundance of citrus trees planted by Murphy. Scott added more acreage to his property and named his new holding "Scottsdale." He opened a general store, post office and hotel; beginning what would become Scottsdale’s business district.

In 1895, Scott doubled down on his investment when he sold off some plots of his property to wealthy owners to develop winter estates or “dude ranches” as they were called at that time where they could escape chilly winters back east.
